In this hadith, our Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) specifically mentioned friends, not relatives. The reason is that we choose our friends, not our relatives.

“Upon the religion of his friend” means that a person adopts and embodies the habits, mannerisms, values, and way of living exemplified by a close friend.

The hadith urges us to be alert and thoughtful when it comes to forming companionships. Those who become part of our inner circle, whom we regard as our close companions, are the individuals with whom we spend much of our time. The people we frequently keep company with leave an imprint upon our character and ideology.

This is why we should choose pious and righteous friends, as they will have a positive impact on our lives.

Parents should also stay vigilant about whom their children befriend. The friends they make at an early age have a lasting impact on their lives.
