The word Tawbah literally means “to turn” or “to return,” in the sense of turning away from or withdrawing from sins. In the terminology of the Qur’an and Sunnah, it signifies regretting sins committed in the past and firmly resolving to abstain from them in the future.
(Ma‘ariful Qur’an)
Rasulullah ﷺ has said, “Every son of Adam is a sinner, and the best of sinners are those who repent.” (At-Tirmidhi)
It is within our nature that we will slip up and make mistakes; we are full of imperfections and shortcomings. However, when we do commit a sin, it is necessary that we seek sincere repentance from Allah Ta‘ala.
Allamah Nawawi, in his collection of ahadith Riyadus Salihin, has quoted from the Ulama:
“Tawbah (repentance) is wājib (incumbent) for every sin.”
There are many benefits of repentance; some of them are as follows:
1) A believer mends his relationship with his Creator and becomes beloved to Him. “…Surely Allah loves those who are constantly repenting…” (2:222) 2) A believer’s evil deeds are turned into good deeds. “…Except for those who repent, believe, and do righteous deeds — for them Allah will replace their evil deeds with good deeds…” (25:70) 3) It brings humility into one’s heart. 4) One becomes cleansed of the impurity of sin. Rasulullah ﷺ has said: “The one who repents from sins is like the one who has no sins.” (Ibn Majah, Al-Bayhaqi)
Conditions for Tawbah to be accepted: 1) There should be a feeling of remorse and regret over the sin committed. 2) There should be complete disassociation from the sin that was being committed. 3) A firm resolve should be made not to commit the sin again.
4) If a person has violated the right of another person, then a 4th condition has been stipulated, he will firstly need to return the right or ask forgivness from the person he has wronged. His repentance will only be complete once the right is returned or he is forgiven.
